Back To School Month

August brings again the reality of getting possibly ourselves, our kids and maybe our grandkids prepared to go back to school. This can be an expensive month with trying to buy school clothes and all the supplies needed to send everyone back to school.

So I went searching for some ideas for helping my subscribers go "back-to-school green" this year.

On Lighter Footstep they had an article called "5 Ways to Green Back-to-School (And it is not this "Eco" Supply Kit). In the article they suggested going to thrift sales, flea markets, secondhand stores to get your school clothes.

Buying a metal lunch or "cooler" box and pack a lunch, instead of buying out of a vending machine. When I packed my husband's lunch, I would use the same sandwich bag all week for his cookies or slices of bread. I would just shake out the crumbs and reuse.

Another idea they suggested was letting your kids ride the bus, or if it is safe let them walk or take their bike to school. This saves on allot of idling cars at the school. To read more click here.

EcoMall has an article called "Earth Friendly Back-To-School Tips" where they included a list of what and what not to buy when buying school supplies. They also talked about how this is a great time to teach your children about being more "green" and enviromentally conscious.

Another idea I read about was recycling your past school supplies, save half used pencils and pens, for my kids we even saved partially used notebooks. We just ripped out the used pages, and finished the notebook out the next year. How about rulers and calculators. Maybe neighbors had older kids and are willing to "hand-me-down" some used but usable school equipment.
