Helping you to live a "greener" healthier life!

December 2008

We want to wish you all a Very Blessed and Merry Christmas from us at MerryMicrofiberCloths.com and MerryMicrofiberBath.com.

In this issue will be included ideas on having a "Greener" Christmas Celebration, December specials and Inspirational Thoughts for the Month.

Ideas For A "Greener" Christmas Holiday!

In this time of job losses and a stressed economy, people are looking for ways to celebrate without breaking their bank accounts. One way to do this is to celebrate more "green".

Some ideas in this article will help you:

  • Decorate more naturally
  • Eat more healthy
  • Ideas for recycling materials
  • Give you frugal gift giving ideas
  • Help save you money

Some green decorating ideas would be:

  • You can use a natural pine tree or live pine boughs, when decorating instead of buying artificial. Or buy a pine tree in a pot or with a root ball in the fall, and use that as your Christmas tree. You can either plant the tree out in the spring or if it is in a big enough pot, reuse the tree next year.  Some communities collect the “done” trees and use them for habitat for wildlife, or if you live in a rural area, put it in your yard for a home for an animal to live in over winter.

  • Use natural products like popcorn, cranberries or raisins to make chains from, and hang them on your trees. If you decorate your tree this way in your home, place the tree outside when finished, leaving the popcorn and fruit chains on the tree, as food for the birds. (Don’t put salt on the popcorn when making for stringing.)

  • Fill large cones with a mixture of bird seed and peanut butter and hang on trees to feed the birds. I make my own suet for the birds. (Mix 8 cups of cornmeal or finely ground corn, 2 cups of regular flour, a small jar of peanut butter and a pound of lard (that I melted in the microwave) mix altogether and fill holes in a wooden log, and hang outside).

  • You can use old wrapping paper, old Christmas cards, craft paper, used ribbon or old scraps of material to make chains to hang on your Christmas tree. This is another good project you can have your children help you with. (Cut strips 8 cm/1 ½” long and 2-3 cm/3/4 to 1inch wide, glue the ends of one strip together. Then take another strip pass it through the loop and glue those ends together. Continue till you have the chain the length you want it or run out of strips. The advantage to making the chains out of cloth material is you could possibly hang them outside on your trees.

  • Use natural materials to make wreaths out of to hang on your door or posts. Some organizations sell evergreen wreaths, which will decompose naturally when finished, as compared to artificial wreaths that stay in the landfill almost forever. Some people burn them in their outside fire pits when they are finished using them as decorations.

  • Make your own luminaries; you can either freeze water in an ice cream pail till it is partially frozen. Then warm the pail, so the ice chunk comes out, break a hole in the top, pour out the remaining water, and you will have a luminary that you can then put a candle in, to light up your walk or garden. Or you can fill a balloon with water, wait till it partially freezes, break the balloon, pour out remaining water and add a candle. The ice helps keep the wind from blowing out your candle and you can make different sized ice globes by using different sized balloons.

  • Hang up your Christmas cards as decorations.

Frugal gift giving ideas:

  • Make homemade cards

  • Give homemade baked items. (I bake fruitcake every year, and give to some of our elderly neighbors). You can give cookies, fudge, nut mixes, healthy snack mixes etc.

  • Make homemade gifts, this can be an embroidered gift, knitted gift, crocheted, pottery, wood working, crafts whatever your specialty. (My daughter made a basket out of brown paper bags for her Grandmother, she cut strips, weaved them together, painted it, then varnished it, and it came out quite nice.) I made some homemade laundry detergent that I am adding to my gift bags this year.

  • Buy used baskets at thrift stores and use as the container to put your gifts in.

  • Look for nice, clean useable items at flea markets, thrift sales, thrift stores or a collectible that someone in your family or a friend might enjoy.

  • Decorate brown paper bags to put gifts in.

  • Use newspaper, comic strips, pieces of leftover material to wrap a gift in.

  • You could use left over material cut in strips to make ribbons from also.

  • Buy gifts that don't require batteries, especially for children, encourage them to use their imagination and own power to make the toys work. If needed buy rechargeable batteries over regular batteries.

  • Need gift tags, make your own from old Christmas cards, other cards, or craft paper.

  • Do family activities together, play games, go cross county skiing, go sledding.

  • Help a neighbor with a job as a gift to them.

  • Help at a soup kitchen, volunteer, visit the elderly at home or in nursing homes.

  • Give your friends, neighbors, home bound, people in nursing homes the gift of music by singing Christmas carols to them.

  • Use gifts bags instead of wrapping paper, they can be reused. (One family writes about the gift given, year given and who it was from on the cardboard in the bottom of the bag.)

Healthier Holiday Eating:

  • Eat more natural food, live foods like raw nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Make snack mixes with nuts, raisins, dried cranberries, roasted garbanzo beans etc.

  • Serve fresh fruits and cheeses as snacks over fat laden, sugar loaded desserts.

  • Replace some of the fats in recipes with applesauce or bananas

  • Use more whole wheat flours instead of all white flour

  • Add more protein to your diet, it helps to reduce sugar cravings and blood sugar drops

  • Add more legumes to your diet, legumes are a good source of complex carbohydrates and protein, drink water or juice instead of pop

Save money & recycle:

  • Use LED lights over incandescent or fluorescent

  • Use glass dishes instead of Styrofoam or plastic. Paper is better too than plastic, for a paper plate will decompose as the plastic doesn't.

  • Recycle your cans and bottles

  • Recycle your Christmas tree

  • Use microfiber cleaning cloths and mops that are reusable, eliminates chemical cleaners

  • Save on energy costs by using microfiber cleaning and bathing products

Inspirational Thought For the Month:

*Remember Jesus Is The Reason For The Season*

·         Take time to remember why we have this season, a time to honor the birthday of Jesus Christ.

·      Take time to enjoy the little pleasures of life: the beauty of the snow, the smiles of little children, their laughter, the peace in the quiet evenings, love of your spouse, the warmth of pet’s love.

·      Take time to do things together as a family: like going after the Christmas tree (remember it doesn’t have to be perfect, let the little ones choose), making Christmas cookies, wrapping gifts together and decorating the tree or playing games (inside or out).

·       Don’t let the business of the season stress you out, limit what you do and participate in, get enough rest, eat healthy, take time for and with those who are important to you.

Have a very blessed season!

We thank everyone for their business this year. We appreciate you!

Testimonials

The bath towels are super absorbent, soft and light weight, which makes them very easy to use. An added bonus - they are thin enough to easily hang on a hook instead of a towel bar. Nice product, at a nice price. Donna W.

I love your towels and cloths! Thank you! The 20's x 40's work fine for wrapping my hair after a shower. I was afraid they would be a few inches too short, but they aren't. Karen Slater of St. George, Utah.

I had ordered 2 microfiber waffle weave towel sets (European Spa sets) for a vacation. Well, I have to tell you, those towels were perfect for the trip. They were just the right size and dried quickly. My trip was to Roatan off the Honduras, and it consisted of kayaking, snorkeling and taking lots of pictures. Kathy Shoaf
